If the "sitter" wants to believe that they are getting a communication from the spirit world, they will find a way to interpret that as if it were correct. In fact, even when they say "that's right" during the reading, it usually turns out later that they have made a "poetic" interpretation of what John Edward communicated. And Edward prompts them to look for "connections" when they don't understand something in the reading -- which just means he's telling them to go fishing. He takes 6 hours to tape 20 minutes or less of cold-reading to make one show. The phone readings are people who have already spoken to producers about what they want to talk about -- they are warm readings. Everything he does with the audience is cold reading, with perhaps a little bit of warm mixed in. But I know of no critic who claims that what he does in the audience could not be done by pure cold reading -- plus some subvocalization, gesture and lip reading. But again, he is most apt to start off a reading with "Does someone's name over here begin with the letter "J"" -- which is really bad cold reading in action. |
