Michael

There is a certain elegance in using performance directly connected with the objective to be achieved as the signal system itself - for example, the use of the symptom (pain, let's say) which is already guarenteed involuntary and fluctuations in the intensity of that pain as the "yes" and "no" signal in the system.

However, in this case, restoration of vision, we hesitate to endorse the strategy for the simple reason that the signals (improved vision for "yes" and return to less than perfect vision as "no", does not lend itself to securing immediate short term involuntary responses (it could but our experience is that it is unlikely).

It is not uncommon that in restoration of vision cases there is a negotiation that occurs between conscious and unconscious whereby the unconscious accepts responsibility for restoration of vision if and only if the conscious mind commits to some behavioral or relationship change. In such a case, one of my favorite ways of arranging how the client's conscious and unconscious will keep their parts of the negotiation is simply that if the conscious mind fails to perform (whatever the agreement is) the unconscious immediately activates the problem as a warning - for example, in a migraine patient, a severe migraine attack. As soon as the conscious moves to keep its commitment, the migraine disappears. Thus, I would suggest your strategy would be of a great value functioning in this manner.

We hope that this intelligible.

By the way, the fact that we have an intuition that your strategy is unlikely to be effective functionally as you originally proposed could be viewed as excellent motivation for doing it that way to discover what happens if...

Remember until you find the edge of a pattern, you really haven't explored and mastered that pattern.
