having a hard time with meaning, especially when it's the author's, is the only kind of time to have these days.  But imagine the alternative! Fortunately, nobody mistook 'whisperings' for a plagerism of 'moby dick'. That's strange; well, perhaps Dr. Grinder and Mrs. St. Clair are actually trying to say something specific.  Yes, you are right, except for one thing; funny is never an option.
