Hello

I agree that the boundaries that distinguish the set of f1 transforms from the set of f2 transforms  seem a bit fuzzy in certain areas.  I don’t recall reading anything from the authors of WITW which suggested to me that the boundaries between these two sets of filters are always clearly delineated.  To propose that the f1/f2 distinction is anything other than fuzzy and analogical/continuous (rather than binary/digital) could be argued to be an extension of a dualistic position regarding the mind-body problem (by a far more skillful logician than myself).  Given that the set of f1 transforms are partitioned by the categories/f2 filters: physical processes, somatic processes, unconscious processes or, more generally, things that the body does; the set of f2 transforms might then be partitioned into: mental processes, cognitive processes, conscious processes or, more generally, things that the mind does.  The f1/f2 distinction could then be argued to be an extension of an interactionist-dualist view of the mind-body problem, where a mind-body split is presupposed.  The mind (the set f2) affects the body (the set f1) and the body affects the mind.

Considering the author’s position on the mind-body problem, their model of the universal modeling process (the f1/f2/FA model) is likely far more materialistic in nature than dualistic in relation to the mind-body problem.  The dual-attribute branch of the materialistic view of the mind-body problem is that brain processes have both  physical (the set f1) and abstract  (the set f2) properties.  Both cognitive and physical processes take place in the nervous system.  Each  FA has (to some degree) properties of  both f1 transformed experience and f2 transformed experience.   I don’t believe that we can proceed from a tabula rosa.

As with any model, the WITW model (f1/f2/FA) raises more questions than it answers.  It is still a useful representation of the universal human modeling process in my experience.  I am at a loss to find a more epistemologically sound, working representation of the map-making process.  Can you offer an alternative?

-Pete
