Martin, I maintain that your question is rooted in the nature system descriptions and arises as a result of confusing arcs between nodes of a system, and the total system. Its one thing to say a specific stimulus caused synapses to fire in my neurology; and quite another to predict how the firing of that synapse will affect the course of my life, upon which this thread may have an influence.
