Hi Todd, You provided two key pieces to bridging our gap in your reply. Thanks! You wrote: "If I am understanding the discussion, we are talking about cause effect as principle or law. It would go something like, when X happens then Y." This is the question we should have asked from the beginning because the answer clears the confusion. You rule! The way I understand cause and effect is as follows: X happens, then Y happens. It may occur that WHEN X happens, Y will always happen, but not necessarily. Cause and effect could also include: A, B, and C happen and then D happens. You also wrote: "Also could you elaborate a bit on the distinction you make between c-e and c-e thinking?" As to c-e, I hope I gave a sufficient description. As to c-e thinking, I think you summed it up well with "when X happens, Y happens," which is a generalization and can be disputable in highly complex systems. What do you think? Martin |
