Robin Thanks for the reference about Turing. We offer the following comment: the sections you quote, while very interesting, are anything but conclusive with respect to the question we are pursuing together. More specifically, "He analyzed what could be achieved by a person performing a methodical process..." and "... based on the transitions between 'states of mind' of a human being performing a mental process" There is nothing in either of these quotes to suggest that Turing thought that what he was modeling was conscious processes. Clearly transitions between "states of mind" are primarily the functioning of unconscious processes. Further, "what could be achieved by a person performing a methodical process" includes both conscious and unconscious processes. We challenge these points as your claim (about UTM being models for conscious processes) is a thoroughly fascinating one. All the best, John and Carmen |
