We are reluctant to comment (as we have no direct (FA) experience of the events you refer to) as to whether it is a fun or ethical application of hypnosis but we can say that it sounds much more like a stage hypnotist's work than what you would anticipate in a training seminar. As to whether it was fun, ask the people involved if they enjoyed it. As to whether it is ethical, that depends critically on the framing prior to asking for or selecting volunteers and the utilization of the patterning subsequently. BTW, we do not intend to denigate stage hypnotist - Michael Mandel is a good friend and respected collegue from Toronto who does exquisite work as a stage hynotist, demonstrating with great clarity the use of Ericksonian patterning. "Is it common to have this kind of "fun" at NLP/hypnosis seminars?" No, it is not ususal - however, the usual is not the focus of work in NLP in any case. "With whom can I train hypnosis in order to be spared from this kind of fun, but still be sure to train with a skilled practitioner?" We would recommend without reservation Stephen Gilligan - an elegant practicioner of Ericksonian (as well as his own patterning) hypnosis.
