Carmen and John,

Gold died around 1980. I believe he was in his early forties at that time. His company Marc Gold and Associates is still an active force in client advocacy.

Gold defined "mental retardation" as condition for which society was unprepared to provide the necessary supports to achieve maximum potential.

I should mention that Gold's "Try Another Way" method applied to both teachers and students. If a student attempted to complete a task and was unsuccessful, Gold asked the student to "try another way" demonstrating his faith in the student's ability to engage in problem solving supposedly beyond that person's ability.

He used to do demonstrations at conferences in which he would bring a person with mental retardation up on stage (itself a shocking action) and teach the person to do a complex task in a matter of minutes.

Gold would get the person's attention in a provocative, playful and usually non-verbal way (such as gently nudging the person, winking and laughing) and then simply do the task. He would then gently move the student to the same position as he was in relation to the task and let him or her "go to town." If necessary, he would stand behind the student, gently position his hands over the student's and provide minimal guidance. Usually by the second or third repetition, the student completed the task independently. (I would classify this as straight 2nd position modeling and would be intereted in your comments).

As you can imagine, audience members (many of whom had been working in the field for years) were amazed and moved to tears by these demonstrations.

While this process is very common today, its application into the world of business and other appropriate contexts is often lacking.
