For all intents and purposes, the unconscious wasn't something that Freud *discovered*, but an idea that he created. Sure, there are lots of suggestions throughout history that something like an unconscious existed, but he is the one who invented what we know of the unconscious, to this day, with some modifications along the way. Remember, we're using a very vague nominalization here. There is actually no such thing as an unconscious mind. But it is useful to think of there being one. |
