1. In 1929 Rudolf Carnap, Otto Neurath and Hans Hahn published the controversial manifesto called "Wissenschaftliche Weltauffassung. Der Wiener Kreis" (Scientific Worldview. The Vienna Circle). They explicitly proposed a behaviorist position on psychology. 2. I think Chomsky´s major criticism of orthodox behaviorism in the Skinner fashion was that it couldn´t account for the empirics. S-R wasn´t enough for learning language. So I would say that the mentalistic models define the structure a black box must have to account for the empirics. As far as Chomsky´s theories are empirically testable, only these structural properties do matter. So I think you can be a good transformationalist and still be a logical positivst. I´m not exactly an expert, but I don´t know what revolution Chomsky brought that made logical positivism obsolete. If I got something wrong here, please don´t let me die stupid. |
