Hi James,

I think a great book to start with is "Understanding Power" by Noam Chomsky. This is actually a book of edited informal talks that Noam has given over the years, and it presents and nice blend of his acedemic rigour with his personal sense of humor and passion as well.

"Manufacturing Consent" is a classic.  You will never look at the media again after reading this book. And if money isn't an issue for you, I would recommend that you immediately purchase (20$) the documentary called "Manufacturing Consent" .

Keep me posted as to what you end up checking out...

Doug
