Jim, it's my interpretation that the "map" is my perception of how the world around me is and how I relate to it. The "territory" is the actual world as it is, and where the feedback comes from. The territory is somewhat static, while the map is more dynamic, in that I have the ability to alter the map by controling the way I think, or if left to chance will be altered by the territory, in which case I would be lost. Not to say that it is always necesarry for me to alter my map, or that it is bad for it to be altered by the territory. I believe that their are times when the thoughts of others are more beneficial for me than my own, and their other times when my own thoughts are more beneficial to me, as well as more beneficial to others. It's this flexibility or dexterity that allows me to control my own destiny. |
