Propogandist BTW, thanks Loiusea - I appreciate the crispness of your response. So, propman, you ask, "Dr. Grinder, were you aware of metastates back in the day?" I assume from context that the time signature you are referring to is the middle to late '70s especially the period immediately preceeding the publication of Structure II by Bandler and myself. The use of the term "meta" was ubiquitious in the early and mid '70s NLP activities in Santa Cruz leading up to and including the publication of Structure of Magic. It was used to model certain of Satir's patterning; it was used to refer to the meta-question (a hierarchical level shift), the meta comment - it was a toy we played with in many contexts of the processes of change. Indeed, Frank Pucelik (the third man in the creation of NLP) founded, owned and operatged a company called META. All that is history. Now my understanding of the intention behind your question, propman, is whether the use and understandings we (primarily Pucelik, Bandler and I) had in those days is the same as the use and understandings of Hall as he deploys the term "meta-state". Here we hit the wall - the difficulty is that from my point of view Hall has yet to offer a consistent explicit sensory based representation of meta states and/or the formal principles that generate the hierarchy in which these creatures appear, so I am honestly at a loss as to how to answer your question. Some of the characterizations of meta states by Hall and people purporting to understand what he is doing including nearly every method known (and already coded NLP - for example, all the sorting and integration techniques detailed in the Structure of Magic, volume II section II. Until Hall offers some explicit representation of meta state and distinguishes this from other patterning, I simply must pass on that portion of your question. You kindly offered to clarify your posting. I thank you and request that you offer an explicit representation of meta state a la Hall and I will do my best to respond to the remainder of your question. All the best, John |
