I agree with much of what you say. I personally find the terms tacit/ explicit lack precision. My own research on the transfer of knowledge and knowing within complex product systems suggests that the NLP rep system/ 4-tuple (FA) and so on provides a more flexible and specific code for making explicit (ie writing down) patterns of human subjective experience. I use it in combination with the idea of "genre"- which I use to capture the situational/ embedded aspects of human behaviour. (ie my ability to play the trumpet also depends on the knowledge encoded in my instrument, the manuscript etc) I agree with almost everything in your second paragraph, certainly the sense of it.. In response to your comment "I don't consider aesthetics a form of pure gratuity or entertainment, but as path of knowledge akin to philosphy and science, though obviously under-appreciated in this role." I would simply ask under-appreciated by whom? Within western hermetic tradition there is the path of the fool, (represented as such in the tarot) The fool is a singing dancing music playing storytelling joker who challenges boundaries, dispenses wisdom and follows a path of knowledge based firmly on the interpretation of experience, life itself. Joseph Moreno and Brian Bates both note that performance art (theatre and dance)in every culture have their roots in sacred ceremonies. Painting of course was originally a way of conveying sacred knowledge. Gurdieff taught his own particular path of knowledge through dance, Rudolph Steiner was an amazing sculpture and painter Taoist healers in china were expected to master the arts of painting, music and storytelling ... One of my favorite quotes is from Robert Heinlein in "The Notebooks of Lazurus Long" "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." As for a science of representations , If you mean by that "an epistemology of everyday life" (cf John and Carmen's forthcoming book Red Tail Math:an epistemology of everyday life) then roll on the revolution. And there's plenty of good company .. the situationist's "Revolution of every day life", Robert Anton Wilson's Guerilla ontology. Of course we're all talking different languages at the moment ....
