GSM, As someone with more than a little experience with being scared about my anger, I'll only say that it's not quite a neat one-to-one relationship, a feeling related directly to a feeling. Sure, some feelings may trigger other feelings, particularly if, in the case of anger, you repeatedly expressed that anger in such a way, toward a particular person, that influenced their state, which manifested in a state, and then behavior that frightened you. In this case I would say it's more about forming linkages through internal representations. I might even be afraid of my fear, or is that really an induction of fear that I've made by meta-commenting about my fear. In this case you would be making a looping strategy where you replace the trigger of the original fear with a new set of triggers based on all the possible ramifications of your fearing, the bodily sensations and behaviors, and their possible meanings and outcomes. "Whose to say you can't have more than one state at the same time?" I guess that depends on what you mean by "state," which is of course a nominalized array of activities (which are other nominalizations, of course). In my definition, any combination of states blends into one. But if you can describe a state of being in more than one state at a time, I'm all ears (or eyes). best, JS |
