1. the dog the cat the horse kicked scratched ran away. 2. The dog, the dog that the cat scratched, the cat that the horse kicked, ran away. 3. The cat kicked by the horse scratched the dog that ran away. The problem for me is how to say sentence [1] to communicate what I intend to, without seeming to have a problem with my verbs. The concordance problem might be a problem in English because the language does not allow unambiguous enunciation of statements containing what you term center-embedded structures, unambiguous enunciation that allows easy unpacking of two or more center-embedded structures. |
