Stephen, you asked a question of John and Carmen. Please note this is not a reply on their behalf. I am away from home and don't have my copy of Frogs into Princes with me. If you haven't ordered Whispering yet, I highly recommend you do. In the book John and Carmen critique some of the early NLP work, with the benefit of 30 years of hindsight. The thing that stood out for me in Frogs into Princes is that early in the transcript the speaker (either or Bandler of Grinder) says something along the lines of - what you are about to hear is bunch of lies. We have no interest in truth, we build models on what works.- Tony wrote "If eye movements work, they should work all the time. Some very sophisticated equipment was designed at Yale to track eyemovements (See Newel & Simon) and was later used to test NLP claims." All of time, c'mon Tony, we are talking about human beings not robots. Cultural exceptions such as the Basques do not fit into the eye pattern model. There are individuals who through neurological impairment do not fit the model and there are exceptions. Tony, regarding your statement about statistical analysis; John and Carmen cover in some detail why statistical analysis is NOT particularly useful for measuring eye patterns or patterns of excellence. In Whispering John and Carmen refer to "discrete analysis" as used in linguistics as a means to conduct NLP research and modelling. What is that quote about statistics? Michael |
