Stephen, I am a graduate student in Developmental Psychology working on a PhD. We have a small group at the University that studies NLP, Ericksonian Hypnosis, Gregory Bateson, Epistemology, and whatever else we find interesting. Our group consists of graduate students and professors in the "sub-disciplines" of social psychology, cognitive neuro-science, developmental psychology and even one clinical psych graduate student. Are we in the minority? Hell Yes. Do we tell people what we are doing? Rarely. Do I specifically mention NLP in class? Almost never. Do I use it to benefit my students and friends? Yes. I'm in a rather cantankerous mood right now, so let me use the statistical model and say that I believe that 90% of psychology is 100% crap. However, the other 10% makes it all worthwhile. PS - Regardless, of the fact that I find people like Tony to be mindless idiots, I must warn you that there are more than a few in the Psych. world, and yes, they are as imprevious to feedback and their own embodied experience as he is. Linear, reductionistic models do little to "explain" subjective experience nor complex developing systems. A few books you may find interesting: WITW by Carmen and John Steps to an Ecology of Mind by Gregory Bateson. General reading on Dynamic Systems Approaches in Psychology. Happy hunting - Ryan |
