My personal response to Picasso: bullshit, if you have the ability to move cleanly between 1st and 3rd and enter a know-nothing state when creating, then explicit knowledge is an asset. If you are unable to do these things, then the price of knowing what you are doing is too high - you may experience an unability to escape your explicit conscious knowledge and therefore unable to create. Please note that this is a statement about a personal limitation of a great painter not the artistic process itself. This attitude - I don't want to know what I am doing consciously by artists is highly amusing and quite self serving - if the artist were explicit about what he or she were doing, then others might be successful in participating in such activities.
