Count The ocassion was the first time Bandler and me brought Stephan Gilligan to meet Dr. Erickson. After some initial circling and once Stephan had re-assumed his own identity (such as it was at the time), eschewing further efforts to endear himself to the master through high fidelity imitation, and towards the end of the first day together, Stephen respectfully asked whether he might ask Dr. Erickson a direct question. When Erickson indicated his acceptance, Stephan asked some interesting technical question, like. ...do you recognize the effects of your displacing your voice systematically when your client has his eyes closed? As Stephan (certainly) as well as Richard and I (unconsciously) leaned into the expected, stronger - inevitable - metaphoric response. Dr. Erickson paused meaningfully and said (something like), "In 1949 I figured out exactly the way in which displacing my voice with a patient in an altered state with his eyes closed influenced him... and then I promply forgot it." So we did, perhaps you will too, John |
