Carmen and John Thank you for your reply. It cleared away my confusion. When I read the words "displaced new 1st" and "imaginary perceptual 1st" it clicked, and the pieces fell in place. I also read the pages you referred to a couple of times. You were right. It was useful. You asked me, "could you give us some indication what difference all of this classification makes?" I now have a firmer grip on the meaning of the terms 1st and 3rd perceptual position. I now think of my imaginary holidays as examples of a displaced 1st, and am not confused as to which term to apply. 1st and 2nd are defined in terms of who is having the experience. 3rd is defined in terms of what the experience is about. You also ask: "Or equivalently, what is the context of concrete application where these distinctions are useful?" Are those two questions truly equvalent? Anyway, I appreciate the second question as well. I am afraid that my answer is, I don't know. I wish I could write that this exercise in taxinomy had resulted in a newfound mastery of the three positions, but that would be an exaggeration. All the best, Mr. x |
