The distortions and generalisations and untruths (don't think they made millions, neither have they said classic code doesn't work etc)in Peter's message would make it easy to dismiss his underlying points, one of which is that many Practitioners get ineffective results. This is hard to argue with. Their salvation seems to have come in the form of 'Coaching' which allows them to return to the therapy model where change has to happen over weeks and months. My suggestion is that in classic code, the creators did not succeed in transferring the attitude that they, as individuals, had when working with clients. Bandler's attitude which I once read as 'either the client's going to change or I'm going to die doing it' does not seem to be one of the pre-requisites of certification. But even this does not seem a sufficient answe to Peter's points Peter wrote: 'Backup your claims John by doing live demonstrations..if I brought you 10 agorophiics and 10 people with phobias and 10 schizopherenics can you cure them with your magick? yes or no is all that is required.' A partial answer can be found in the book 'Magic in Action' the transcript of a filmed series of sessions which Bandler (my references to him are only because I have more experience of him than John)carried out with people with serious problems who had not been treated successfully in therapy. They all changed and were followed up and stayed changed. For me, this has always been the most fascinating of the NLP books because the potential consequences for humanity, based on what was achieved were surely amazing. But Peter's post left me uncomfortable because I have had a few great successes with NLP - and some dismal failures, in myself and others. If I need to take on responsibility for that, so be it. But if, in fact, NLP only works some of the time, or the skill level of Grinder and Bandler is so high that we need to spend years mastering that skill - I think we should be told. Pete |
