"My main query was because I do understand how this is a question of epistemology, and I understand at least some of the senses in which the answer to that question is "yes". However I have no idea why emergence is related in any important way to that question." To me, emergence and emergent phenomena are ways to find out/describe how pattern and order arise out of the interactions between and among systems without resorting to an entity or controling device of some kind. When we deeply look we can find evidence for "patterns without a pattern maker." Rather than subscribing to one of the ubiquitous nominalized entities (god, genetic code, mental representations etc.) we can make detailed observations and try to see HOW something unfolds. Does that make any sense or am I being vague? Ryan |
