GSW,
Remember also that a lifetime's commitment toward genius in one field itself is a multifarious event.  You have to learn how to putt and drive, get yourself out of a rut or sand trap, in various terrain and weather conditions.  Some days may be more like climbing, while others may be like flying, depending on your states and those you come in contact with.

And postmodernism, more popular syster of poststructuralism, is not simply as set of arbitrary values, but an adjustment made when ideas like "authentic self" seem to shrivvel in meaninglessness.  But this all happens in the context of language.  Freud attacks Descarte's cogito with his libido and all of the ramifications spill from there.  J Lacan, a structuralist, makes further moves, so then there is no unified self except for an artificial composition of drives and structures, and not even structures anymore, but something else (post-structures and post-processes -- ;-) ).  In John's world there is at least someone who can make choices about who he is going to be and what he is going to do, and I think he's right not to identify who that is.

best,
JS
