This quote: "To this day, I can play in sequence "individual" parts of a west African polyrhythm well enough but are unable to pre-hear the emergent pattern that occurs once the individual parts are played against one another. " ...captures the magic I feel when studying dynamic systems approaches and is an accurate description of emergent phenomena. It also captures the foolishness of prediction in the social sciences and the limits of linear-causal approaches. How does it do that? I don't have the words at the current moment. Mark - I believe John's example is of multiple players interacting together, all of whom are adjusting to their own "parts" and to the others at the same time, creating a system that can move into different directions and beats. Who moves the system? Who knows exactly when and where the system will shift and what will emerge? Thanks for your post - I had missed John's comments the first time around. Peace - Ryan |
