Stephen1 wrote: "Seems to me that using Korzybski's ideas from Science and Sanity would go a long way towards promoting individual excellence and cooperation" Dr. Grinder wrote: "it might prove correct assuming anyone can interpret what Korzybski wrote - I find his work theoretical and without explicit operations." The linguist, D. David Bourland, Jr. might argue that the offshoot of Korzybski's system known as E-Prime is one such explicit operation. Here is a link to his paper, E-Prime!- The Fundamentals: http://esgs.free.fr/uk/art/epr1.htm#24 Bourland advocates the abandonment of all uses of the verb "to be". His concern and that of Hobbes, Russel, Whitehead and Korzybski centers upon the semantic usages of the "to be" of Indentity and Predication. Bourland claims that E-Prime "provides a method for materially reducing 'the human misunderstanding.'" associated with the "is" of identity and the "is" of predication. If Bourland's claim is valid, then this E-Priming of the English language might facilitate the promotion of individual excellence and cooperation as Stephen1 suggests. Do you have a take on this? e_lie |
