to carmen & John: on page 78 of "Whispering" you write (4th paragraph) : "a psychologist using statistics ... will conclude that there is no pattern" A psychologist who would conclude that is making a mistake against the rules of logic when it comes to interpreting his statistical results - unfortunately, this happens a lot, since few people seem to be able to interpret statistical results correctly. If I cannot reject the nul-hypothesis, the correct conclusion is that I failed to prove the statistical significance of the pattern (if A then B). However, one cannot return the statement: according to the rules of logic, (if not A then not B) is NOT a correct statement. In other words, it's not because I failed to prove that there is a pattern that there is no pattern. Another possibility (and maybe havin,g the same probability) is that I need to use another strategy to find the pattern. The point of using statistics is to deliver a proof - the absence of a proof doesn't prove much. I hope you're not dismissing statistics on the base of such interpretation errors. One of the points I come accross is that being able to prove there is a pattern using statistics helps a lot to achieve scientific credibility. Thus, I prefer starting from the presuppostion that if there is a pattern, I'll find a way to develop a statistical test that will be able show there is a pattern. Patrick www.merlevede.biz |
