Hi Mike A pleasure - say hello to Tom for us! What a fine historical example - the Darwin phrase "natural selection". We certainly agree with your statement: "...denying the ambiguity of language can have dire consequences when the authority of science goes unquestioned as a result" We would propose that anytime that the authority of anything goes unquestioned, we've got problems. And having done my (JG) doctorate in Linguistics, I am especially sensitive to the lack of sensibility among otherwise excellent researchers to the pitfalls of language usage - both what you mentioned - ambiguity - as well as the more ubiquituous phenomenon - vagueness - that except for formal representations seems invariably to accompany language use. To be balanced about this issue, we would point you to the remarks we offered on pages 43 - 45 in the section entitled - the Distinction between Science and other legitimate human activities. At least scientific practice offers a relatively clear strategy to resolution of (some) differences held among well-intentioned participants other than the bankrupt appeal to authority. Given the epistemology we offer in Whispering, this class of strategies may be the best on offer for us - certainly at this stage of development of the species. All the best, John and Carmen |
