Hey,

I also wanted to add that I think genetics is quite a useful analogy for this discussion.

In genetics they study the gene sequences (internal representations) that can be used to express a particular trait.

Before the discovery of DNA and it's gene sequencing people could only deal with expressed and observable traits...much like before NLP Modelling was created 8)

But just because two people have dark hair...it doesn't mean that they both have the same dark hair gene or gene sequence...just a similar trait...and obviously the same applies to NLP Modelling.

In terms of statistics and this analogy...it's very similar to your discrete approach to NLP.  If you want to create a redhead then statistics won't tell you anything...what you really need is a person with the colour hair you want so you can analyse their DNA to make explicit the gene/s responsible for this trait...

Analysing populations for expressed and observable traits can however help point to areas that are worthy of further investigation.  Not necessarily identifying specific internal models...but showing who has the traits we're interested in and how to allocate modelling resources.

In both genetics and NLP the sequences or models are internal and require a trained (and relatively rare) practitioner capable of using the relevant tools and techniques to make them explicit.

I also think this raises an interesting point.  NLP Modelling seems to have been intimately linked to the Application of "change work" (another good reason for Whispering's cleaning up).

I think there is also alot of useful information that can be learned for studying how Models evolve in the wild (e.g. outside the world of NLP).  The 3 evolutionary forces of variation, replication and selection work for implicit models too.  I'm not saying this should change the focus of Modelling...just that it "could" be useful.

Thoughts/opinions/critiques very welcome...
