A different question is: What guidelines do you think should apply to use of NLP on the internet, once such communications become practical? Verizon is planning a big rollout of fiber-optic service to 1 million homes (and offices) in 8 states, probably including California, which will include Videoconferencing capability. Eventual offerings of 100mbps should allow sophisticated VR applications. But Verizon will start with movies on demand, digital TV, and videoconferencing. See http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_21/b3884113_mz063.htm Or the May 24th issue of Businessweek. quote from the article: "It plans to offer digital TV, videoconferencing, and movies-on-demand either this year or next....Internet connections of up to 30 megabits per second, more than 10 times faster than a state-of-the-art cable modem or digital subscriber line (DSL), will be possible, Verizon executives say. ...if there's demand for it, Verizon intends to offer consumers Net connections of 100 megs or more.... if this gamble succeeds, it could prove to be the catalyst for a new generation of communications in the U.S." -nj |
