Anthony, I think Castaneda's use of such a term as "stopping the world," which he equates to stopping internal dialog, suggests how ubiquitous (what I think we're calling) F2 processing is, and that it is an extraordinary feat to interrupt ordinary knowing. From my experience, stopping the world would best be represented with a question mark and exclamation mark fused together, with no word proceeding or following, although there are times I've seen an em-dash and semi-colon linked together in such a way as to provide a similar experience, but it depends how it's placed in the text. Of course, I'm not sure everybody here agrees precisely what F2 is and isn't, and perhaps punctuation doesn't belong in F2 at all. Perhaps some uses of language don't either, ie Zaum poetry. best, JS |
